Assessment Content - Image or Video
< Back to support page
The Assessment Authoring Tool enables portal administrators to create, deliver and analyze a range of assessments, from simple quizzes to sophisticated exams. This powerful toolset can help you build a basic text-based test, or create a multimedia experience with text, images, and videos provided as question or answer content. This is a great feature if you would like users to watch a training video, and then answer review questions to assure competency; or if you want to ensure your students can identify company products by sight.
This document explains how to enrich assessment courses with graphic and video content, assuming a prerequisite knowledge of course creation basics. If you need instructions on adding Assessment courses or designing Tests, please see the related document:

ADDING QUESTIONS TO AN ASSESSMENT
Once you have designed a Test with sections broken into the Objectives (or Sub Objectives) you want students to achieve, you can create the assessment questions and content. When reviewing the instructions below, it is important to understand that the term “Distractor” refers to a possible response to the question or prompt. All correct and incorrect answers are called Distractors.
Assessments support the following question types:
Fill in the Blank
: The participant types one or more words to indicate their answer. Responses are scored by text match.
Multiple Choice
: The participant selects one choice from a list of possible answers. There is no limit to the length of each answer. True/False questions are often created with this setting.
Multiple Answer
: Similar to multiple choice, except the participant is not limited to choosing one answer. A user can select none, one, or more of the choices offered.
Comment Box
: All free form responses are accepted. Often used for opinion or survey questions.
Knowledge Matrix
: Cross-relate responses to multiple questions from a single exam item. This question type presents several multiple-choice questions together, where the participant selects one choice for each statement or question presented. The correct answer requires that all responses be correct.
The following example shows a Multiple Answer question setup with numbered field descriptions.
Delete Row / Add Row
: Configure the number of Distractors (possible answers) before entering any information. Deleting or adding a row before saving the question will clear all field selections and text.
Question Text
: Enter the question or prompt text.
Objective / Type
: Select which objective, or sub objective, the question falls under. Then choose the Type of question from the options listed above.
Mandatory
: Indicate if the question is Mandatory, meaning that it will be included with every assessment launch. The default setting “No” implies that you will be creating a pool of questions larger than the number presented for the Objective. Selecting “Yes” confirms that, whether or not you choose to randomize questions in your Test settings, this question will always appear in the assessment.
Randomize Distractors / Question Sort Order
: Questions, and their associated distractors, will display in the order in which they were created. If you decide to Randomize Distractors, the possible responses for each Question will remain grouped, while the Distractors would be presented randomly for each launch of the assessment.
Under Distractors, use the radio button to indicate the
Correct Answer
from the list of distractors.
Note
: If using the Multiple Answer question type, you must first click
Update Question
to change the radio buttons into check boxes, then select multiple correct answers.
Click
Add Question
to save the entry.
The window will refresh. An outline of where the question will reside in the assessment displays at the top of the page. At the bottom, a preview of the new question displays. This is the “Edit Question” page, which you can revisit and revise any time. In addition to the standard return links, note the linked options to Delete Question, Add Question, Update Question and add Images as part of question or distractor content.
INCORPORATE IMAGES INTO QUESTION OR ANSWER CONTENT
Add Images to Questions
From the “Edit Question” page, you can click the
Images
link at the top of the page to place an image in any number of places within your question content.
Click the location-specific link to upload an image with the
Choose File
button.
Once you have selected the graphic you want to add and see the file name displayed in the “Image” field, select your desired image
Alignment
setting (left, middle, right). Click
Add Image
to complete the process.
The system will then provide a preview of the question with new image content, allowing you to
Delete
the image file, add images in other areas, or
Return to Question
to continue editing.
If you want to include a very large or detailed graphic and feel that it will be displayed with dimensions too small to be useful to learners, click the
Add Large Image
link and upload the same file again.
This will provide users taking the assessment a “View Large Image” link under the embedded graphic, which will launch the image in a new window with the original dimensions of the file.
Add Images to Answers
From the “Edit Question” page, you can click the
Images
link next to any Distractor (possible answer).
Next, click the
Add Image
link to upload an image with the
Choose File
button. Once you have selected the graphic you want to add and see the file name displayed in that field, click
Add Image
once more to complete the process.
The system will then provide a preview of the distractor with new image content, allowing you to
Delete
the file or
Return to Question
to continue editing.
Once added, images are also displayed in the “Preview Question” section of the Edit Question page.
EMBED A VIDEO INTO QUESTION CONTENT
As previously mentioned, the ability to add videos to an assessment empowers portal administrators to design tests centered around video training. While the Assessment Authoring Tool will host uploaded images as course content, videos must be hosted on a third-party website (such as Vimeo.com or YouTube.com) and then linked into the assessment using an embedded URL. Advantages of using a third party video hosting site include: minimal bandwidth usage, faster loading times, and fewer file size restrictions.
Note
: If multiple questions will be asked about a single training video, make sure you have configured your
Objective and Question settings
to allow ordinal display, and list the question that includes the video the first.
Copy Embedded URL from Video Hosting Site
Locate the video that you want to include in the assessment on Vimeo, YouTube, or other video hosting site. Find the
Share
or
Embed URL
associated with the video. (These links are provided in different places depending on the video hosting site, so you may need to consult that site’s online help for instructions.) Once found, select the URL provided and copy it to the clipboard by pressing
[Ctrl+C]
.
Note
: Inserting a direct URL into the authoring tool will not work. Embedded URLs include formatting code, which allows you to edit size, border, and window expansion settings within the LMS if necessary.
Example of our LMS training video hosted on YouTube.
Add the Video to Question Content
Once you have the appropriate URL copied, navigate back to the Edit Question page, and paste the
URL
into the
Question Text
field. Feel free to provide written instructions, a question, or prompt to accompany the video, as both components can display as question content when the assessment is launched.
Author the rest of the question as you normally would, and click
Update Question
to save changes. The page will refresh, and at first will display a blue screen where your video should be.
To complete the rendering process, please click
Return to Test
. Afterward, the video should display properly when that question is viewed or edited, and also when the course is launched.
