LMS Roadmap: Audience and Unlimited Enrollment

Hello again from Latitude R&D. This is Tom Merritt with a monthly update on some of our activities regarding the Latitude Learning LMS product.

Recent Product Enhancement - Audience and Unlimited Enrollment

Two recent LatitudeLearning enhancements improve the system’s ability to dynamically manage users who meet certain criteria and enroll large groups of users: Audience and Unlimited Enrollments.

An Audience is a collection of users who meet certain criteria: they all have a specific set of job functions, they are all part of a specific organizational unit (or units), or they may have all completed certain training curriculums. In the past, whenever a portal administrator wanted to group together people for a specific purpose, he or she would define a User Group in the LMS. However, a User Group is static; it must be maintained by the portal administrator, who manually adds or removes users from the collection depending on whether or not they meet the administrator’s criteria. In contrast, an Audience is comprised of a set of rules, and it automatically adds or removes users based on whether or not a user meets the rules defining the Audience. Consider the case of someone who was a technician but is now a salesperson. If the portal administrator defined an Audience of technicians and an Audience of salespeople, the LMS would automatically remove the person from the technician Audience and add them to the Sales Audience… without any involvement on the part of the portal administrator.

Unlimited enrollments is a new approach for enrolling large collections of users via an offline process. To date, when a portal administrator or other role in the LMS wanted to enroll users, they would either a) run multiple enrollments for 50 users at a time via our online process for immediate, real time confirmation, or b) add a course to the interest list for a defined set of users (user group) or an entire organizational unit. With the new Unlimited Enrollments approach, a portal administrator can enroll any number of users via an offline process and receive confirmation of successful enrollments (as well as unsuccessful enrollments) via automated notification in the LMS. This new offline process also permits the administrator to manage enrollment conflicts (Has the person been enrolled in this course previously? Can they take the course again? Does he or she already have equivalent credit? Are the maximum number of people at the user’s location already enrolled?) prior to submitting the group to the enrollment process.

Used in combination, the Audience and Unlimited Enrollments capabilities enable an administrator to leverage a dynamically identified collection of users (Audience) in an enrollment process for any number of users. For example, the administrator could enroll everyone in an Audience of ISO 9000 quality control staff, all service managers… anyone meeting the Audience rules who need to be enrolled in a specific course.

Upcoming Releases
A new icon-based navigation tool and course enrollments page are in final QA and should be out next month. This upcoming release will simplify the interface for users trying to access different areas of the LMS. All the students need to do is bring up the navigation page and click on the icon to reach the desired area of the LMS. They can also access a new course enrollments page to view their interest list, enrolled courses, required (by a certification) courses or all of these courses together.

What’s Coming
As reported previously, the reporting engine is moving along the path to deployment. Our steering team has been reviewing the progress regularly and making changes as we get closer to deployment. We want to make sure the interface is robust, easy to use and capable of handling most of the tracking needs for all of our clients, both large and small. It should be released into QA within the next few weeks.
