Beginning with the development of its first motorized bicycle in 1952, Suzuki has gone on to become a world leader in high performance vehicle and recreational vehicle manufacturing. Today, Suzuki Motor of America, Inc., produces motorcycles, scooters, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and boats.
Kurt von Ahnen, Technical Training and Publications Manager for Suzuki Motor of America, Inc., shared with us about Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. training program.
Suzuki's Technical Training Program
"Our training program is centered on Powersports and Marine Technical Training," Kurt told us, adding that while dealership technicians encompass much of the core audience, training is available for any actively-employed Suzuki employee. Marine training is centered on the technical aspects of boating vehicles; Powersports training covers motorcycles, ATVs, dirt bikes, scooters, and personal water crafts (PWCs).
Using a blended model that first introduces theory through virtual concepts and transitions into Instructor-Led Training (ILT), technicians must be able to perform in a tactile environment to earn their recognition and credentials.
Training will vary depending on an employee's primary role. "We are in the process of adding a Suzuki SalesPro element to our web-based training," Kurt said. This addition will expand Suzuki's training curriculum products to include Marine, Motorcycle, and Motorcycle Sales.
The Importance Of OEM Training
"It is vitally important that everyone in the supply chain be properly trained in order to give the end-user a consistent experience," Kurt emphasized. "Beyond that, our industry is much like so many others. It is not getting simpler. Product continues to develop and incorporate more and more technology at an ever increasing rate. You can’t work in the field and fake it for long."
It is Kurt's personal observation that OEM-based education is what keeps the flow of information moving along the right rails, protecting both the dealership and consumer by establishing and maintaining its best practices.
